EPISODE SUMMARY:

As midlife women, we know all too well the physical changes our bodies go through as we age. One of things that changes is our hair. As we get older, our hair starts to thin and lose volume. Unfortunately, with the thousands of haircare products being sold, so few are targeted and made specifically to help older women with their hair needs. Better Not Younger, a haircare company, sought to change this by creating hair products tailored to the needs of women over 40. In today’s episode, we sat down with Sonsoles Gonzalez, the founder and CEO of Better Not Younger, to discuss her company and how she’s helping to start a conversation on haircare for midlife women. Sonsoles spoke with us about how her own hair struggles inspired the idea of Better Not Younger. When her hair began to change and she couldn’t find products to help, Sonsoles spoke to other midlife women and realized this was an issue they were all facing. Better Not Younger’s products address a plethora of midlife hair issues including hair the slowing down of hair growth and the decrease in the production of collagen. The Name “Better Not Younger” came from a desire to go against the stereotypes that products targeted towards aging are trying to fix a problem. Sonsoles wanted to emphasis that changes in our hair is something women in midlife all go through, and instead of trying to fix the aging process, Better Not Younger’s products strive to help make women feel better. When we asked Sonsoles about the most important ingredients in her products, she told us about she and an MIT chemist ensured the products took care of hair at a scalp level, emphasizing how important it is to keep our scalps healthy as we age. We asked about her serums and hair washing, and Sonsoles told us that her serums do not need to be washed off, and that despite popular belief, she would not recommend washing hair more than every two or three days. We then asked Sonsoles about some of her most popular products, including the hair thickener, collagen gummies, butter masque, low suds shampoo, and the better not younger kits. For the hair thickener, she told us that it was the first product created for the line. She told us the collagen gummies are important supplements, especially if someone has an unhealthy diet, for nutrition plays a factor in our hair’s health. The butter masque is one of Sonsoles’ favorite products, for it leaves your hair and scalp feeling smooth without feeling heavy, and she enjoys the many kits and low suds shampoo as well. When asked if her products are safe for use by men or younger women, Sonsoles’ assured listeners that anyone could use Better Not Younger products. Though they are targeted for older women, younger women can use them as preventative hair treatment, and men can benefit from using them as well. We asked why Better Not Younger does not have any dry shampoos, and Sonsoles told us that they are actually currently working on releasing a dry shampoo. Customers can buy Better Not Younger Products on both the company website and Sephora’s website, and they are also featured sometimes on HSN shows. Sonsoles also told us that there is a loyalty program in place where you can collect and redeem or give away points.

Sonsoles Gonzalez:

Sonsoles Gonzalez is the founder and CEO of Better Not Younger, a haircare company designed specifically for women over the age of 40. Sonsoles first started to come up with the idea for the company after doing research on hair treatments for her own hair. As we age, the texture and fullness of our hair changes, and Sonsoles began experiencing these issues herself. She spent 25 years working on haircare brands for Procter & Gamble and L’Oréal, and still, Sonsoles was shocked to discover the lack of hair products targeted towards older women. After speaking with other women and realizing they all felt the same way, Sonsoles decided to leave her corporate life behind to start her own haircare brand. Now, Better Not Younger is helping thousands of older women nationwide feel beautiful and confident by using products tailored for their hair’s needs. Better Not Younger’s products are sold through their website as well as at Sephora, and all of their products are 100% vegan, paraben-free, sulfate-free, and cruelty-free.
