EPISODE SUMMARY:
Dr. Anjua Mathur, the medical director and owner of Angel Longevity Medical Center, utilizes natural, alternative anti-aging medicine to treat midlife patients’ and improve their energy and health. In today’s episode, we sat down with Dr. Anju to discuss brain aging, finding the right hormone treatment dosage, what treatment plans Dr. Anju gives her patients, and how long a person can stay on a hormone treatment plan.
First, we asked Dr. Anju to explain how our brains age as we get older. She explained to us that while menopause affects every part of the body, one of the main symptoms menopausal women have is brain aging. When a woman enters perimenopause and menopause, she starts getting symptoms of brain aging, such as brain fog, irritability, and anxiety. Referred to as Meno-brain, the decline of hormones in the body causes these symptoms to arise. When seeing her clients, one of the most common complaints Dr. Anju hears is that the women don’t feel like themselves and are losing their temper more easily than before menopause. The decline of estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone in the body as a result of menopause affects the mood, memory, and sleep areas of the brain, leading to Meno-brain symptoms.
While some doctors use antidepressants or single medications to treat Meno-brain symptoms, Dr. Anju takes a different approach with her own patients. Instead of simply treating symptoms, she wants to address the root cause of them. When asked how her clients react to hormone treatment, Dr. Anju shared that some of them are initially hesitant due to fear of developing breast cancer. However, she mentioned how the data suggesting a correlation between breast cancer and hormone treatment is taken from an incomplete study. For hormone treatment, Dr. Anju uses bioidentical hormones, which are hormones that are manmade but identical to natural hormones.
Finding the right dosage of hormones is unique to every person, and to ensure her patients receive the best care, Dr. Anju makes an effort to keep her clients as informed as possible. She gives them not only information on hormone treatment itself but also explains to them how they can tell when their body has too much or too little of a certain hormone. For example, when a woman has too much estrogen, the first symptom they’ll notice is breast tenderness or fullness. If progesterone levels are too low, a woman will experience anxiety and mood swings. Using hormone treatment can help slow the process of brain aging, and when putting patients on bioidentical hormone treatment, Dr. Anju makes sure that all the hormones are balanced.
One of the biggest questions midlife women have about hormone treatment is how long they should be staying on it. Dr. Anju said that since the purpose of treatment is to balance hormone levels, you do not have to stop treatment at a certain age. You need to monitor your hormone levels and may have to adjust dosages as needed, but you do not need to stop treatment altogether if it is helping. Dr. Anju also recommended you get yearly pelvic ultrasounds if you haven’t had a hysterectomy. Pelvic ultrasounds are non-invasive and can be done without a doctor’s prescription. Finally, for where to get more information or schedule a consultation, Dr. Anju said to visit her website, angellongevity.com.
