Kristi D. In this episode, we spoke to Kristi about matchmaking, dating in midlife, suggestions for first dates, and red flags on dating apps.
First, we asked Kristi to explain how she got into the matchmaking business and what matchmaking actually is. She told us that for her, her journey into matchmaking began through her dating consulting business. While she enjoys being a consultant, she noticed a pattern amongst her clients of them being discouraged by online dating. As a matchmaker, she can avoid the unknowns of internet dating and instead truly get to know her client, their values and their wants. Kristi then uses the information provided to find someone for her client that matches their values and goals. To start the matchmaking process, she begins with an initial consultation to learn more about what a person is looking for in a partner. Then, Kristi sets up a photoshoot to give her client updated photographs to send to potential matches and sends both the photographs and the client’s profile out in order to find them matches. Other ways Kristi finds matches is through social media, public events, or even approaching people on the streets. Kristi works with both men and women seeking monogamous relationships and does background checks while also ensuring that the client has moved on from past partners and is ready for a new relationship.
When working with midlife clients, Kristi said she often finds that those 50+ want a more solid partner. They value kindness, a giving nature, and honesty above all else. Midlife clients also may feel more nerves about jumping back into the dating world. To overcome their nerves, Kristi suggests going out and meeting as many people as one is comfortable with in order to gain confidence and figure out what it is you’re looking for. It’s also important to go on dates without becoming too attached to the outcome. Rather than focus on how it will end, it’s better to be in the moment and enjoy the date itself. We also spoke to Kristi about her experience as a dating consultant. Unlike matchmaking, dating consulting is for people who need to regain their confidence in order to get back out there. Kristi helps clients get over fear of rejection and teaches them how to meet people with similar interests. For example, she often suggests that clients go to meet-up groups for people who share a hobby or interest with them, such as hiking, running, or knitting. She enjoys both consulting and matchmaking and attributes her success to the close relationships she forms with clients as well as her genuine love for both her job and the people she works with.
First impressions are vital when dating, so for first dates, Kristi has a few set rules and tips for ensuring her clients are as prepared as possible. Before any date, Kristi has her client have a phone call with their potential match to ensure there’s a connection. Afterwards, the date itself is held in a public place in a setting that allows them to feel for emotional and physical chemistry. As for etiquette, Kristi emphasized that a person should never talk about their exes, avoid negative topics, be on time, dress well, and try not to focus too hard on the outcome of the date. Kristi helps clients at both her dating consulting and matchmaking jobs prepare for the perfect date, and when asked about the difference between her practices, she said that due to the expensiveness of matchmaking, many people choose consulting instead. Kristi’s matchmaking services are in Philadelphia, South Florida, and New Jersey, but her online consulting is offered worldwide.
Finally, we asked Kristi about dating apps and what red flags to avoid on them. For the best dating apps to use, she suggested match.com, tinder, hinge, and bumble. When on the apps, Kristi said to avoid anyone who doesn’t have pictures or are really negative on the profile. She also told us that when it comes to age ranges, men are more likely to have a more flexible age range preference than women.
