Episode 22: HOW TO GET UNSTUCK IN MIDLIFE.
Time to introduce Ellen Albertson, PhD, RDN, CD, NBC-HWC. Dr. Ellen is a Psychologist, Registered Dietitian, National Board Certified Health and Wellness Coach, Reiki Master and Mindful Self-compassion Teacher. The Midlife Whisperer™, she empowers women to get unstuck and find the confidence, energy and clarity to make their next chapter their best chapter. She brings over 25 years of counseling, coaching, and healing experience to her holistic practice and transformational work.
The conversation begins with a discussion on menopausal mindset. Dr. Ellen warns women not to presume symptoms for perimenopause. By doing that, it will be a type of self-fulfilling prophecy. Instead, try to manage this stage through:
- healthy food
- sleep hygiene
- exercise
- spending time with friends and loved ones
- stress reduction
We continue with what she likes to call the Anxiety Bucket. She talks about how to respond differently to anxiety instead of an instant frustration. Slow the response time from event to stress. There are also ways to practice mindful eating and exercise that will increase endorphins and reduce anxiety and stress.
Try writing down ways to better take care of yourself, like baths or coffee with friends. Slow down and begin to process who you are by rewriting the “why” you do things, your purpose. Look at your body in a different way with compassion, self care and acceptance.
Nest topics was Chakras: the 7 main energy systems. They help you conceptualize your energy field and how you are feeling through each of them. You can’t see them but each indicates a different emotional energy fields. In midlife and menopause, you may feel uncentered or unbalanced. The top chakra, however, opens up during this time of life and maturity and understanding come to the forefront.
Dr. Ellen also offers Reiki healing. It is a Japanese relaxation technique with several levels and it means divine universal life force energy that we all have access. It is a healing modality in which we channel this energy on a deep level. It can help with menopausal women as well.
Learning to let go is also an important component to midlife acceptance. Dr. Ellen believes that it is a grief process like any and you have to allow that grief. Then, process it through therapy or journaling and then try to fill the void. Filling the void may be a journey of self discovery and she does psychological testing to help her clients find their individual paths. The ability to focus on gratitude and shift to looking at what you have as opposed to what you lost are both valuable tools for processing. Depression is a very low energy and gratitude is a higher level of energy to absorb. Women must continue to grow and develop even if that means getting out of your comfort zone.
Her clients appreciate her ability to cover every base holistically. Her PhD in psychology helps with the mindset, Reiki with the energy, coaching with healthy eating and mindful self-compassion.
