EPISODE SUMMARY:

From weekend anchor and co-host at Entertainment Tonight to the first female solo host for Wide World of Sports, Julie Moran has made her mark in the entertainment industry as a journalist, host, and sportscaster. In today’s episode, we sat down with Julie to discuss her podcast, Limitless, what it was like being the first female host at Wide World of Sports, working at Entertainment Tonight, and Julie’s experience with Menopause.

First, we asked Julie what inspired her to start her new podcast, Limitless. She told us that the idea first came to her after she noticed the lack of midlife content available for women. Julie found herself having to deep dive into research herself to find out important information. Through her own research, she also began looking for the most commonly searched things other midlife women would look up online. After finding results such as “menopause”, “career building” and “reconnecting with spouses”, Julie and her producer created a list of the 15 most searched topics for women 40-70 years old and found experts in each of those topics. While doing her podcast, one of the most surprising things Julie has found is that women have a tendency to downplay their achievements. While men will list their career highlights proudly, women have been told they need to justify their accomplishments. Even when she was the first female host at Wide World of Sports, Julie found herself downplaying her achievement. It wasn’t until she began speaking with other midlife women on her podcast that she realized how important it is for women to stand up for themselves and be their own advocates.

When asked about her time at Wide World of Sports, Julie explained how the transition into hosting happened quickly. After being called into her boss’ office, she was offered the job right away. She was also offered important advice: know your stuff and study twice as hard as the men, because they’re going to come at you twice as hard. From the moment she started hosting, that advice came to fruition, with journalists slamming the network for hiring a “pageant queen” as a sports anchor. Eventually, however, even the most critical of writers were impressed with Julie’s work and came to respect her. Julie also worked at Entertainment Tonight as an anchor and co-host, and with her job has come hundreds of interviews with both athletes and celebrities. While both athletes and actors have fame and accolades, there’s a key difference between their interviews: lying. With an athletes’ highs and lows on camera, it’s impossible for them to lie in an interview. For an actor, however, they can get away with more lying and more attitude. Julie even told us about her most memorable interview in Hollywood with a young Julia Roberts. The day before the interview, the New York Post had released an article about a then married Julia hanging out with another man, and the news frenzy that followed left Julia in a foul mood. During the interview, she had an attitude and was short with Julie, so much so that Julie ended up stopping the interview entirely so Julia could cool off. After leaving the room, Julia returned minutes later to apologize and asked if they could restart the interview. She even rewarmed up the room by performing a magic trick for Julie before they began again.

Every woman’s experience with menopause is different, and for Julie, it came with its own set of challenges. While she didn’t experience hot flashes or sweats, she did struggle with mood changes, weight gain, and increased anxiety. Having never been told about perimenopause, Julie didn’t understand what was going on with her body. It took going to a doctor to confirm that she was, in fact, in perimenopause, and she was put on HRTs shortly after. Luckily, the HRTs worked well for her and helped her manage her symptoms. Finally, we asked Julie what she hopes to achieve with her podcast, and she discussed how she wants to bring light to topics women feel they have to search in secret. The lack of conversation surrounding menopause was a challenge for Julie’s own menopause journey, and through Limitless, she hopes to help make information more readily available for women. She aims to empower women to be able to talk to their partners, friends, and loved ones about menopause without judgment or shame.
