What’s Your Undertone?

Working in film and television makeup, Deborah was trained to understand the importance of color. If you are not wearing the right colors, then you will never look your healthiest. So how do you determine what colors are best for you?

For Deborah’s clients, she does something called draping to determine the women’s undertone. You will find that most magazines will speak about light, medium, and dark complexions. The importance does not fall in those three things but instead the undertones in your skin. • Your skin’s undertone refers to the natural colors underneath the surface of your skin. Understanding your undertone allows you to find the right foundation and the colors that suit your hue the best. • The three traditional undertones are warm, cool, and neutral.

To tell which colors suit your hue the best, you can look at some of the following things:

Neutral• A neutral undertone usually means that your skin tone and your undertones are about the same color. • Your veins may look colorless or match the color of your skin. • Both gold and silver jewelry look good against the skin. • As well as all colors of clothing most likely look good against neutral undertones.

Best Foundation – Peach Tinted Foundation

Warm • A warm undertone ranges from a peach to golden hue. • Your veins may look greenish in color. • Gold jewelry usually looks good against your skin. • Off-white clothing as well as brown hues favor your warmer undertone. • Mahogany and golden hair dyes look better on your skin. • Seem to tan but never burn.

Best Foundation – Slightly Yellow Tinted Foundation

Cool • A cool undertone usually includes pink and bluish hues to the skin. • Your veins may look blue or purplish in color. • Silver jewelry usually looks good against your skin. • True white clothing as well as black hues favor your cooler undertone. • Platinum and ash-colored hair dyes complement cooler undertones. • Seem to sunburn easily.

Best Foundation – Slightly Pink Tinted Foundation

Makeup Tips for Midlife!

Deborah Williams’ believes that it is important for women to understand that the makeup they were wearing in their 20’s and 30’s is not the same makeup they should be wearing in their 40’s through 60’s. Deborah has a passion for makeup in midlife that is always geared to colors and finding out what makeup works for you.

It’s not about the makeup it’s more about what it does for you!

  • Foundation • Once you know your undertones, you can work on getting a good base foundation. o A good base foundation is key to bringing out your beautiful features. As skin becomes finer and as we age, evening out the skin tone can bring out the features that are unique to each woman. • Deborah often hears concerns from clients about foundation feeling heavy or feeling like a mask. o These days there are so many different formulations and types of foundations that with a little trial and error you will find a foundation that feels good on your skin and will suit your skin tone! • Deborah suggests mineral powders and BB creams for their ease of use. o Mineral powder foundation is fantastic as it won’t absorb the moisture in your skin and will actually help retain it. o Mineral foundation also won’t give your skin a dry look that other powder is known for. • Deborah also suggests her finishing powders for a slight and soft glow!
  • Eyes  • Brows are incredibly important as we get older as they often tend to lose the color and our hairs become finder. o There are ways to use your brows to frame your eyes. • Deborah suggest eliminating liquid and cake activated by water formulas. Instead go for a cream-based formula. o Cream-based formulas are softer and can smudge to create a softness to your look. o You can also work the product into your lash line to create thicker looking lashes. • Deborah also suggest balancing your eyes by adding a shadow or a little bit of liner under the eye. o You will not cause shadows or eye bag enhancement, instead it will help balance your eyes and make them pop!
  • Lips • As we age, our lip line starts to fade not looking the same as it did when we were younger. • Deborah suggest lining your lips to where your mouth meets and having your lipliner touch the lip line. • You can either fill your lipstick in on the lip line, outside the lip line, or inside of the lip line. o To achieve fuller lips, put your lipstick on the outside of that lip line. o If you have fuller lips, put your lipstick on the inside of that lip line. • This helps bring a fullness to your lips that cannot be achieved by just using lipstick!
  • Concealers and Brighteners • Deborah in private sessions will usually leave the concealertill the end even though the biggest complaint she sees is eye bags. Why?o Because 90% of the time, by the time she finishes her client’s makeup they do not even notice their eye bags as they have enhanced their features in another way. • Concealer is a heavily pigmented formula that we usually use a lighter color to brighten the under eye. • Deborah shares if someone is really having a problem with this, she suggests using a brightener. o Eye brighteners go under the eye and lighten the area. Eye brighteners are better for finer skin as they do not give the added texture of concealer but still give the brightening effect!
  • Taking Off Your Makeup • While makeup wipes are great for occasional and easy use, Deborah recommends using a cream makeup remover to help breakdown the product as well as using a makeup microfiber cloth. • She also suggests after cleansing your face to use a serum as this is key for aging skin. o A serum including retinol or hyaluronic acid can help your skin absorb moisture and the retinol will increase the cell turnover and collagen production.
