Going through menopause can often feel like an isolating experience. You’re surrounded by your kids, your spouse, friends and family, yet you feel alone. None of them can relate to the emotional and physical changes you’re going through. And without someone else to relate to and confide in, menopause can make you feel like you’re going crazy. Author Harriet Powell, a midlife woman herself, saw how much other midlife women yearned for community and created one of her own. Her novel, The Menopause Monologues is a book that shares actual stories from midlife women about their experiences with menopause, perimenopause and aging. The Menopause Monologues gives midlife women a platform to share their voice while also helping educate others on what it’s really like for women going through menopause.  Today, we sat down with Harriet to discuss her book and how it helps boost the voices of midlife women. In today’s episode, we discuss how Harriet got started writing, The Menopause Monologues, menopause and aging, and menopause and the loss of libido. 

HARRIET POWELL

Harriet Powell is an author and mother whose writing has given a voice to midlife women and the struggles of menopause. Having been raised on the countryside, Harriet grew up with a love of nature and literature. After graduating high school, sheread English Literature at Oxford, which only solidified her love of reading. Her book, The Menopause Monologues, is a novel that utilizes both Harriet’s and other midlife women’s voices to educate the public on menopause. The book contains real-life stories of women who have been through menopause and are ready to share the emotional and physical changes they endured. Through writing The Menopause Monologues, Harriet has not only given menopausal women a platform, but she’s also given midlife women who may feel alone something to connect to and relate with.
