EPISODE SUMMARY:

For this week’s bonus episode, we sat down with Jen Trainor McDermott, CEO of the company Cefaly to discuss Cefaly and how the CEFALY DUAL Enhanced Device helps get rid of migraine pain. First, we asked Jen to explain the difference between a headache and a migraine. She told us that, compared to headaches, migraines can be extremely debilitating. Migraines start at the trigeminal nerve, the spot between the eyebrows. They cause pain, sensitivity to light, nausea, and more. Unlike headaches, which cause pain across the whole forehead, migraines can target a specific area and create intense pain there. Headaches can also be easily treated with over-the-counter medications, while migraines are often more complicated to manage. The severity of migraines often makes those suffering feel depressed and left out, for they have to cancel plans and stay inside to cope with the pain they’re in. With CEFALY DUAL Enhanced Device, it is a non-drug related treatment applied on the skin. In October of 2020, Cefaly was FDA approved as “over the counter”. Electrodes are placed on the head, and consumers either use the product to prevent a migraine or help eradicate one that’s already present. The biggest side effect users of Cefaly have reported is a sedative effect.

When asked about the specifics of Cefaly’s website, Jen explained that the site itself is easy to use. There are clinical claims available on the site to show people’s experience with Cefaly, and these claims are written in such a way that anyone can understand. Customers can buy the device, electrodes, and can either purchase bonus electrodes or sign up for a monthly service that delivers electrodes right to them. The device itself is $379, and while it is not covered by insurance, Cefaly offers PayPal credit as well as periodical promotional codes. Cefaly’s website also includes training videos, an email chain with additional videos, a great customer service team on the phone, and a medical advisor, Dr. Johnson.

Cefaly’s product has two settings: acute and preventative. The acute setting is to target an ongoing migraine, while the preventative setting can be used to stop a migraine before it starts. The acute setting requires one button push, and the preventative setting needs two. As for the product presentation, Cefaly listens to its customers and their feedback. They’ve recently changed the design to make the button bigger and the material sturdier. There are also L.E.D. lights that tell you when the product needs to be charged as well as a charging dock. We also asked if the electrodes for Cefaly are reusable, and Jen said that while they are, it does depend on skin texture and how they’re stored. For example, those with oilier skin may get less use out of one electrode than someone with dryer skin. For storage, the best way to keep the electrodes is sealed in a bag.

Safety remains a top priority, and for Cefaly, they ensured all safety tests were performed and passed before releasing their product. Cefaly is FDA cleared with no negative test results or safety risks. Cefaly’s technology is similar to that which has been on the market for years, with machines that target pain in other parts of the body.

Finally, we asked how to find Cefaly online, and Jen gave us the url: www.cefaly.com.

From Cefaly’s Website:

We are a global team on a mission to solve the persistent problem of migraine through advanced therapeutic innovations. Our name, CEFALY (pronounced sef‑a‑LEE), is derived from céphalée, the French word for headache, and cephalic, a medical term that means “related to the head.”

Since 2008, we’ve continued to test and improve our proprietary device, CEFALY DUAL Enhanced, to offer people with migraine a safe and effective, drug-free treatment.

While the causes of migraine are not completely understood, current research shows that the largest and most complex cranial nerve, the trigeminal nerve, is heavily involved in the sensation of migraine headache pain. CEFALY DUAL Enhanced has been specifically engineered to modify pain sensation in the trigeminal nerve through its ophthalmic branch, which runs under the skin of the forehead.

CEFALY DUAL Enhanced is FDA Cleared for the abortive and preventative treatment of migraine. It’s trusted and recommended by leading healthcare professionals, as well as hundreds of thousands of people with migraine worldwide. The ACUTE setting is clinically proven to stop or reduce migraine pain during an attack. With compliant daily use, the PREVENT setting is clinically proven to reduce the frequency of migraine days.
