EPISODE SUMMARY:

As women age, navigating changes to our skincare and makeup routines can become confusing. From finding what products work best with our skincare needs, to fighting against society telling us what makeup products we can and cannot use, it’s difficult to learn how to learn the ins and outs of our own routines. To help answer some of the many skincare and makeup questions women in midlife have, in today’s episode, we sat down with celebrity makeup artist, author, and beauty editor Riku Campo.

With years of experience in the industry, Riku has a plethora of helpful tips and tricks, one of which being his famous “Riku Facial Massage”. We asked Riku about the purpose behind this massage, and he explained to us that massaging the face stimulates muscle tone and breaks down oxygen in the blood cells, making our skin look and feel better. We then delved into Riku’s history and journey to becoming a makeup artist. Riku told us that originally, he started as a child actor in Finland, working in theater alongside his sister. As a teenager, however, he realized he had more of an interest in fashion than acting. Years later, he went to makeup school in Finland which led to his successful career as a makeup artist.

When asked about must-haves in nighttime skincare routines for women 40 and older, Riku emphasized the importance of washing off your makeup every single night and washing your face again in the morning, using a milk cleanser, using sunscreen, and using face serum and toner. For makeup, he mentioned that women should not purchase too thick of a foundation and that the color should always match the skintone of their neck. He also spoke about a metallic eye roller that, when used for a minute on top of face cream, stimulates the eye area and can help de-puff the eyes. For must-haves in morning skincare routines for women 40 and older, Riku spoke of milk cleansers, sunscreen that has SPF 30 or SPF 50, vitamin c serum, day creams, and the importance of massasing the products into the skin. He then talked about how no matter a person’s age, they are never too young to begin looking into skincare and makeup. Beginners should start with simpler products and then work their way up to wherever feels most comfortable. When asked about tips for makeup for women 40 and older,

Riku talked about how women should not use harsh contour, overline their lips, use too dark or too pink of a foundation shade, use very shimmery or glittery eyeshadow colors, use mineral foundation, or use fake eyelashes that are too long. For makeup dos, he said midlife women should use a cream-colored pink blush. To get rid of age spots, he recommended using color correctors and to remember to put powder over foundation so that the color corrector stays put. We then asked him about eyebrows, and Riku told us that to him, the hype around eyebrows is over-exaggerated. The most important eyebrow care a woman can do is to keep them clean, to fill them in with a pencil or matte eyeshadow, to shape them with a brush, and to use an eyebrow tint if a person desires to remove any gray hairs. When asked about eye wear such as glasses and sunglasses, he said that eye wear can shape your face and that women should not fear going for bigger and more colorful shades. He also emphasized that it is important to keep your eye wear clean.

In regard to his personal experiences, we asked if Riku had ever been starstruck by a client, and he told us that when he first did Meg Ryan’s makeup, he was nervous, and his hands were shaking. Riku then spoke to us about the importance of remaining positive and putting happiness into everything you do, for people are beautiful when they are the happiest.
