EPISODE SUMMARY:

As founder of the Points Partner, Owen Beiny has created and mastered a system of using everyday spending and credit card points to travel for less. In today’s episode, we sat down with Owen to discuss the value of using points, what to look for in a potential credit card, the number of credit cards you should have, and when the best times to travel are.

First, we asked Owen about the basic elements of his money-saving lessons. He explained that the two main ideas he teaches are incoming and outgoing points. With incoming points, you can redeem and use them in order to travel for less or even for free. Incoming points make up about 30% of the equation; it is just as crucial to know the right ways to apply those points. While most travel companies have portals for point redemption, there are other, more efficient ways of using points. Owen told us how by transferring points from credit card companies into frequent flyer programs of airlines or points programs of hotels, you can book awards and mileage redemption, saving you money. Along the lines of saving money, Owen also offered our listeners a discount code for his classes. By using code “fly”, you can get 10% his class and learn the Point Partner’s Pyramid of Points, the system Owen uses to teach his points and savings methods. When asked about the value of points, he explained that points are a flexible form of currency. They can be used as credit card points but also as air miles, cash back, gift cards, and more. Owen personally uses points predominantly to travel internationally for free or low prices.

For what to look for in a credit card, Owen said that the best place to start is by looking at your own spending habits for each month. It’s important to view your bonus categories, such as food, gas, office supplies, and other locations where using a credit card will get you five to ten times the amount of points for every dollar you spend. He then explained the logistics of points, discussing how credit cards can give you thousands of points a year to use. For example, he estimated that every 100,000 points is worth about $700 of travel. We also asked him about the validity of credit card mail, and Owen told us that any physical forms of mail sent from credit card companies can be discarded. The mail does not come from the credit company themselves, but rather a third-party marketing company. Owen suggested that if you’re going to apply for a new credit card, you should do so through a website or somewhere you can speak to an actual representative. He’s proud that through his website, Owen can talk to consumers directly and explain complex financial topics in simple terms.

When asked the difference between pay by points and mileage tickets, Owen explained to us that when paying with points, it is a paid ticket using credit card points to cover a bill. For a mileage ticket, it is accessed through a frequent flyer program and allows you to transfer credit card points into air miles. Mileage tickets also allow you to use frequent flyer program benefits. We also talked about how to figure out how many credit cards you should have when attempting to follow his points system. Owen said that the amount of credit cards a person should have depends on two things: their skillset with points and how much they spend per month. For beginners, it is best to start with two lifestyle credit cards to be used for necessities such as groceries and gas. New credit cards also often come with sign-up bonuses and annual fees, so when purchasing one, it’s important to find the card that is best fit for you and that will offer the most benefits for your individual financial needs. Owen also emphasized the importance of having good credit, at least 700, and consistency with paying bills on time in full before attempting his points system.

Finally, we spoke to Owen about the best times to book travel plans. He told us that the earlier you can plan, the better chance you have at saving money. Booking a trip six months or sooner in advance offers much better prices and seating options. He also mentioned that in his class, he teaches students how to view not just one airline but multiple, which allows them to find the best prices and seats. It also allows people to avoid an airline’s blackout dates, for they have access to numerous other airline options.
