EPISODE SUMMARY:

Through creating the Galveston Diet, Mary Claire Haver continues to use her extensive research and expertise to help midlife women regain control of their dietary health. In today’s episode, we sat down with Mary to discuss how she came up with the Galveston Diet, the importance of understanding and treating inflammation, the connection between midlife and weight gain, and the various levels of programs the Galveston Diet website offers.

First, we asked Mary what inspired the idea of the Galveston Diet. She explained to us that initially, she worked full-time as an OBGYN. During patient visits, she started to notice a pattern amongst midlife women: many were coming in with complaints about weight gain, despite citing no changes to their diet or lifestyle. At first, she offered them various diet plans and other dietary changes she herself had been conditioned to lean on. However, after losing her brother and gaining weight, Mary’s inability to lose weight as easily as she’d been able to before sparked inspiration. Rather than counting calories, Mary instead wanted to create a program that focused on lowering inflammation. She designed a program with three parts: intermittent fasting, anti-inflammatory nutrition, and fuel refocusing. Mary began sharing her program with friends and people on social media, and before she knew it, she was able to turn the Galveston Diet into a full online program. The program currently has around 69,000 members, and users pay a one-time fee for lifetime access to it. When asked about how success is measured in the Galveston Diet, Mary said that she doesn’t use the scale or numbers to determine a person’s progress. Instead, she focuses on improvements in symptoms from using the diet. We also asked Mary how she feels about using the word “diet” in her program title, and she was honest in saying if she could go back and change it now, she would. However, she also explained that the word “diet” in medical terms simply means a nutritional program and pattern of eating. It is not necessarily directly related to losing weight.

When discussing inflammation, Mary emphasized the importance of not only understanding but treating inflammation. She told us that 7 out of the top 10 causes of death for women involve chronic inflammatory issues. Visceral fat in our bodies can become an inflammatory organ that creates more inflammation, makes us more resistant to insulin, and puts us at higher risk for disease. One of the best ways to fight chronic inflammation is through nutrition and omitting inflammatory foods from our diet. Some top inflammatory foods Mary suggests avoiding are diets with artificial colors and flavors and nitrite in meats. One of the biggest aspects of the Galveston Diet is intermittent fasting, and over a period of five weeks, Mary teaches her students how to adjust their bodies to accommodate fasting. The program operates on a 16:8 protocol, with a 16-hour window of the day with no calories and an 8-hour window for eating. Intermittent fasting is not meant to be a weight loss or keto diet; it is meant to improve inflammation in the body. However, weight loss can be a result, and Mary has seen clients lose weight in a healthy way due to using the Galveston Diet.

After trying so many diets and trends, Midlife women often begin to feel like a failure for being unable to lose weight. For those struggling, Mary stated the importance of remembering that there will always be bad days with poor eating habits. Rather than dwelling on them, you should remind yourself that every day is a new day to start over and work on making healthier choices for your health and body. When discussing health, we also asked Mary the different between macronutrients and micronutrients. She told us that macronutrients are what hydrate fats and proteins, while micronutrients are vitamins and minerals. We should be getting a bulk of our micronutrients from food, though supplements can offer some micronutrients as well. Diets and nutrition can bring about negative self-talk amongst midlife women as a result of weight gain and doctor consultations. Many say they feel invisible after they can no longer reproduce, as if doctors do not take them as seriously, and it’s a feeling many perimenopausal and menopausal women can relate to. Many also feel like they’re too busy to maintain a proper diet. For those who feel like they have too much going on to be strict about their diet, Mary discussed how vital it is to make your nutrition a priority, and that even small changes can end up having a huge impact. A tip for busy women to help keep them on track with their nutrition is meal-prepping. Instead of going to the store, buying a bunch of food, and then letting it go bad in the fridge, Mary suggested preparing meals and having everything packed up before you work or are too busy.

Finally, we asked Mary about the different levels of the Galveston Diet program people can sign up for. She told us there are four tiers: signature, gold, platinum, and VIP. Signature members have 24/7 access to an all online, self-study program that includes meal plans. The gold plan adds on PDF program downloads, journals, workout programs, and a cookbook, while the platinum plan includes a boot camp. The boot camp consists of 100-150 students and allows participants to learn the science of the program with coaches. The VIP subscription is $15 a month and includes live sessions with Mary, guest speakers, extra meal plans, and a magazine. Members in one program can upgrade to a different program at any time.

The Galveston Diet

The Galveston Diet is the first and only online nutrition program developed by a board-certified female OB-GYN and specifically designed for women in menopause to fight menopausal and mid-life weight gain. The Galveston Diet Program provides members access to this natural weight loss course, along with videos, text, and visual aids for learning. The self-paced program gives women complete control of their weight loss journey. Since its launch in 2017, the Galveston Diet has grown to over 65,000 users and numerous testimonials claiming weight loss along with a decrease in other menopause symptoms such as brain fog and hot flashes. The program includes the below three phases:

Intermittent Fasting – Changing eating patterns to narrow the window of eating and increase the window of fasting for long-term health benefits.

Elimination of Inflammatory Foods – Following a diet filled with foods packed with natural antioxidants and anti- inflammatory components that decrease risk factors is the main component of fighting chronic inflammation. Removing foods that cause inflammation in the gut will reduce chronic low-grade inflammation making our bodies work more efficiently and feel better.

Fuel Refocus – Training our bodies to break the addiction of sugar and processed carbohydrates and refocus on healthy sources of fats, protein, and carbohydrates.
